I'm so afraid it won't live long in my care.

I kill everything, except orchids. I have had them for several years and they keep blooming. Just put 3 ice cubes in them once a week and that's all the water they need. MIne have been known to go a month or more without water and still live. When they flowers drop off don't cut the stems off until them are brown and crunchy and you are good to go. Usually by the time I cut them off the new shoot has started. Good luck with it. I love my orchids.
